Breaking The Barriers
Documentary Photography Exhibition & Public Lecture Series

"Eileen O'Leary has been photographing and writing about life in Lesotho on behalf of Action Lesotho the Kerry based NGO since 2006. Eileen's exhibition Breaking the Barriers documents the lives of ten different people in Lesotho with disabilities. The exhibition challenges, inspires and encourages people in Ireland to learn about the difficulties faced by people with disabilities in Lesotho; lack of access to education, training, employment, transport, essential services and discrimination. I support the view that it really is time that people with disabilities were afforded equal rights.

I was drawn to the story of Mamokete, a teacher at a secondary school in Maseru who is visually impaired and has had to overcome numerous challenges to continue working. 'Disability does not mean inability'.

Eileen's exhibition will tour universities and colleges in Ireland where I hope that it will highlight issues, raise awareness, create links between disability groups in Ireland and Lesotho and encourage collective and personal action from the people who view the photographs. It is my wish that the exhibition will provoke understanding and support and that it provides inspiration for people to take action.

In speaking to Eileen she expressed her thanks and objective, 'The vision of Irish Aid in financially supporting this development education project is ensuring that staff and students in colleges and universities all over Ireland will have the opportunity to reflect on the inequalities that currently exist for people with disabilities in the developing world. I hope that I can encourage people to volunteer their time with Action Lesotho both in Ireland and in Lesotho'. I wish Eileen every success with this important exhibition."
